Charismatic, quirky, unique – that’s what we say about percussionist Han Bennink (1942), who celebrates his eightieth birthday this year. He surely deserves national treasure status by now because he can look back on an incredible career in which he played all kinds of jazz without ever making concessions. Bennink’s work with the Instant Composers Pool is still a jewel in his crown 55 years on. Today, he is considered the grand old master of Dutch improvised music, who has garnered so much fame that he is one of the few Dutch jazz musicians who still appears in DownBeat magazine’s annual lists. NN North Sea Jazz honors this giant, presenting him in three formations: a duo setting with Japanese pianist Aki Takase, a trio with an unpredictable twosome - saxophonist Ben van Gelder and guitarist Reinier Baas, and of course with his ‘own’ Instant Composers Pool Orchestra, with whom he and co-founding father Misha Mengelberg performed great deeds.
