Daniel Lanois brings a retrospective of his career to the festival, drawing on a rich catalog. The Canadian has been making music since the 1970s. He first gained world fame mainly as a producer, collecting no fewer than seven Grammys for his work with U2, Peter Gabriel, Neil Young, Bob Dylan and Emmylou Harris, among others. Atmosphere is always paramount in his productions, as evidenced by recording locations that are sometimes eccentric, including a barn and a church. Rolling Stone magazine called him “the most important record producer to emerge in the 1980s.” But he was also active as a soundtrack composer and solo artist, and now Lanois has an impressive list of albums to his name. The latest of these, Heavy Sun (2021), was recorded during the darkest days of the pandemic with, among others, jazz drummer Brian Blade. Lanois says the mix of classic gospel and modern electronic is meant to convey a positive message.
