With his constant quest for groundbreaking musical evolution, you can rightly call fourfold Grammy winner Robert Glasper an artistic and creative bridgebuilder. Throughout his career, 43-year-old pianist, arranger and producer has been moving between jazz and hip hop - not by accident two styles that change constantly through improvisation and innovation. Yet the Texan also uses classic rock or indie pop elements, giving his creations a new and refreshing dimension. His groundbreaking Black Radio (2012) set the tone for Glasper’s vision of pop music: a melting pot of - at times contrasting - styles that support, strengthen and confirm one another. Glasper extends his philosophy to the stage: during live performances there are no limits to his innovative creativity. As the NN North Sea Jazz 2019 Artist in Residence put it himself: “It is all about spontaneity, energy and flow. Only through improvisation can pure magic come into being.” This year, he released Black Radio III.
