It´s as if she emerged straight from the American Deep South, guitar hanging nonchalantly on her hip... But Yola - or Yolanda Quartey, as she was known then - was actually born in Bristol, England. The hip harbor town on the British west coast is mainly known as the birthplace of trip hop (Tricky, Massive Attack), but Yola adds a contemporary touch to the traditional Americana sound. Her career took off immediately with the release of her debut album Walk Through Fire (2019), produced by Dan Auerbach (guitarist and singer of the Black Keys). Her music crossed the ocean effortlessly and at the Grammy Awards she was nominated in the categories Best New Artist, Best Americana Album, Best American Roots Song and Best American Roots Performance, the last two for Faraway Look. Yola has been hailed as the new queen of country soul in the press, including The New York Times and Rolling Stone. Last year saw the release of her successful second album, Stand For Myself.
