Saxophone player Tineke Postma is one of a kind. She is one of the few Dutch jazz musicians who appears in the DownBeat International Critics Poll each year. Postma’s career is impressive. Her music is sometimes called post-bop, but this term is too narrow to describe her free and open approach. The saxophonist won the prestigious Buma Boy Edgar Prize in 2015 and in March 2021 she was named European Musician of the Year by the Académie Du Jazz in France. This power woman is convinced more female artists will follow in her footsteps: “Ever more women can truly play jazz and are part of the international jazz scene.” In 2020 she released the album Freya: her return as bandleader. As the title suggests, the album is dedicated to the Frisian-Nordic goddess and mythical Mother Earth and several other female sources of inspiration. Postma will perform the album with her Freya Group: trumpeter Ralph Alessi, pianist Kris Davis, bassist Robert Landfermann and drummer Tristan Renfrow.
