Nona was studying music management, until she found out that she much preferred singing - preferably on stage and with a real band. It’s a good thing she found that out; now we can enjoy her rough-edged warm sound, too. Her voice sounds like she’s been through a lot. Nona’s life story goes a long way to explain this. It started out idyllic: her parents managed a record store and encouraged her to make music. But when she lost her father at the tender age of 14, she turned rebellious and was expelled from school. Finally, she travelled to Curacao, where she eventually worked in a whiskey bar. Upon her return, the Brabant-born singer went back to music, full time. She was allowed to record songs with producer’s duo Likeminds (John Legend, The Roots) and her debut album Nona (2019) was nominated for an Edison in the category best newcomer. Her latest album No More Tears In My Champagne will be released this year.
