Clarinetist Martí Mitjavila is still young. He hails from Barcelona, where he discovered jazz through the records his father brought home. Mitjavila studied at the Amsterdam University of the Arts and seven years ago met double bass player Simon Osuna. From that moment on the two have been inseparable. Their deep friendship can be heard in the music they make together, like a beautiful dialogue. Drummer David Puime is a more recent addition. The three clicked so well that they formed a band. The trio dives into lesser-known material from the Great American Songbook, but they also play Mitjavila’s own compositions. Rooted in tradition, they nonetheless look ahead. In 2019, the trio won first prize at the Prinses Christina Jazz Concours, and thanks to that prestigious victory, the Martí Mitjavila Trio is now performing at the NN North Sea Jazz Festival, albeit after some delay.
