If you are mentioned in the same breath as legends Nina Simone, Etta James and Billie Holliday, as an artist, you are bound to set the bar high. But Lady Blackbird, the alter ego of American Marley Munroe, doesn’t cave under the weight of this admiration and comparison. The singer-songwriter, who now lives in Los Angeles, grew up in New Mexico and discovered her love of music through gospel, after which she took to the stage at a young age. These days she combines her own work with classical jazz and soul ballads, like on her acclaimed debut album Black Acid Soul (2021). This album was recorded in Sunset Sound’s famous Studio B in Los Angeles. Based on its sound and feel, the album could have been recorded in the days of the legends she emulates. With her powerful and memorable voice, Lady Blackbird beguiles her audience which makes for a live experience that touches and lifts the soul.
