The Nationaal Jeugd Jazz Orkest (NJJO) was formed in 2009 and was ready for its seventh artistic director in 2021, versatile saxophonist Maarten Hogenhuis. He currently leads the “Dutch Jazz Youth Team” with a newly written repertoire: an eclectic mix of jazz, rock and Afrobeat. Inspiration also comes from current themes such as climate change and women’s rights. Hogenhuis himself performs as a soloist, demonstrating that he is one of the most outstanding performers on the Dutch jazz scene. The alto saxophonist comes into his own in a mainstream setting, but shows a completely different side as a member of power jazz formation BRUUT! He also has his own trio and performs with guitarist Jesse van Ruller. The NJJO is a learning orchestra, and its members change every two years. During their time with the NJJO, the young talents (under 25) are immersed in an intensive educational program.
