Jazz generations inspire each other, sometimes leading to special collaborations. A recent example is Gary Bartz & Maisha: two acts that seem made for each other. The legendary American jazz saxophonist Bartz has played with many greats such as Miles Davis, Art Blakey and McCoy Tyner. In the 1970s, he created a furore with the band Ntu Troop. Bartz selected elements from African traditions and reworked them in a fusion of bop, free jazz and rock. I've Known Rivers And Other Bodies is a classic from Ntu Troop. Maisha found its sound, spiritual jazz, partly through Bartz. Maisha debuted in 2018 with the critically acclaimed There Is A Place and performed at NN North Sea Jazz a year later. On the album Night Dreamer Direct-To-Disc Sessions, Gary Bartz and Maisha deliver a scintillating performance.
