While the old legends from America’s Deep South seem to be leaving us slowly but surely, there is some hope for blues rock in the person of Marcus King. His beautiful, wailing voice and sensational guitar playing bring to life the days of Lynyrd Skynyrd and the Allman Brothers. King grew up on the blues because his father Marvin is a blues guitarist, too. King effortlessly blends blues with Southern rock and long, jazzy jamming. Wearing an actual cowboy hat, the smiling young man (1996) from Greenville, South Carolina strums his six strings with relentless fury. Usually, he does so with the Marcus King Band, although in 2020 he released his first solo record El Dorado. It was produced by Dan Auerbach of The Black Keys and on it King is more subdued. El Dorado rightfully received a Grammy nomination for Best Americana Album.
