Who is the most famous Dutch saxophonist? Ask anyone in the street and there's a good chance the name Hans Dulfer will crop up. With his illustrious and progressive formations (Perikels, Reflud and Big Boy, among others) his body of work has led him to become an icon in the Netherlands. He was also present at the birth of the Dutch jazz scene, as an organizer, advisor (also for North Sea Jazz!) and the co-founder of the Bimhuis. He played psychedelic free jazz, including with Group 1850, created the first Dutch world music, and was the first jazz musician to collaborate with house DJs. As a fifty-year-old he was still able to achieve pop-star status in Japan. Dulfer, who has now passed the age of eighty, still prefers to play live, in the most diverse places and with unflagging energy. For years he has hosted radio shows, written columns, published books and acted in films and series. Now he is playing venues with a new band called DULFER! Total Response.
