Pianist, composer and bandleader Michiel Braam founded the Bik Bent Braam in 1986. He performed his compositions, such as 1995's Het XYZ der Bik Bent Braam (26 pieces, one for each letter of the alphabet) with them until 2012. Many reviewers named Duke Ellington as the main inspiration for the orchestra and the compositions. Reviews spoke of “a perfect balance between the classic big band idiom and a more contemporary sound.” In 1997, Braam (who is also head of the Jazz & Pop program at the ArtEZ Academy of Music) was awarded the Buma Boy Edgar Prize, the most important jazz prize in the Netherlands. In 2020, he released a new album with his new company Son Bent Braam. This is a Latin jazz version of his earlier album, but now with a lineup of top musicians from the Dutch jazz and Latin scene: El XYZ de Son Bent Braam. Suitable for listeners and dancers alike!
