Guitarist Lionel Loueke calls himself “blessed by all continents.” This is because of his dual heritage: Western and African, which inspires and colors his music. Loueke left his country Benin in 1994 to study jazz at the American School of Modern Music in Paris. He continued his education at the renowned Berklee College of Music and the Thelonious Monk Institute in the United States. At the latter, Herbie Hancock became one of his mentors and remains a steady factor to this date. Loueke was asked to join the legendary pianist on a tour and to accompany him on his Grammy-winning album River: The Joni Letters (2007). On his album HH (2020) Loueke performs a wonderful tribute to his mentor with fascinating and singular interpretations of Hancock’s work. These days, both artists can rightly be called very experienced musicians who bring out the best of each other in a band.
