Benjamin Herman, himself not averse to a little feel-good music, has already played with this funky trio in the Netherlands, but this year they’re making their debut at NN North Sea Jazz.
Delvon Lamarr taught himself the rudiments of jazz and had already become a virtuoso on several instruments by the time he became captivated by the Hammond organ. Lamarr weaves a fine tapestry of warm, slightly dirty sounds (imagine Jimmy Smith and Baby Face Willette), and is answered by guitarist Jimmy James, who alternates funky riffs à la Steve Cropper with screaming, Hendrix-like solos. Drummer Dan Weiss completes things with his understated drumbeats. Formed in 2015 in Seattle, the trio began by performing on the local gig circuit. Since then, they have played at sold-out venues all over the world, and their third album is out:
Cold As Weiss.
