When they perform in a jazz joint, they make an impression. This was immediately clear during their performance at the first Rockit festival in Groningen. But with their album Smash Hits guitarist Reinier Baas (1985) and alto saxophonist Ben van Gelder (1988) are expanding their range. It is a live recording of their concerts in Amsterdam and Utrecht, where the duo performed with the Metropole Orkest, conducted by German Christian Elsässer. The repertoire of Smash Hits contains compositions from earlier projects by both Baas and Van Gelder, brought to life again in arrangements by Canadian Daniel Jamieson, Italian Gerd Hermann Ortler, and Christian Elsässer. Reinier Baas is an exceptional guitarist who continuously changes his perspective. Ben van Gelder is distinguished by his unique amalgamation of lyricism, energy, elegance, and rhythm. Elsässer (1983) started his Metropole career in 2012, when he was a participant in the Arrangers Workshop.
