ARNAUD ROELOFSZ
At a crossroads, you have a choice of directions to take. The choice made by new chief conductor Dennis Mackrel, co-conductor and arranger Rob Horsting and artistic director Juan Martinez is clear: to explore new horizons with top-class music. The idiom of the Jazz Orchestra of the Concertgebouw is based on 1950s big band jazz. The group sees its task as being to make the cultural heritage of Dutch big band jazz accessible to new generations as well as develop the music further. The impressive double album Crossroads clearly illustrates this mission. There are some quite long pieces, three of which were written by saxophonist Joris Roelofs (winner of the North Sea Jazz Composition Assignment in 2016). This makes for profound music with integrity and no unnecessary special effects. Guitarist Martijn van Iterson and trombonist Ilja Reijngoud, among others, play major roles. New developments in Dutch big band music!
