If there is one vocalist who rightly deserves the title ‘world singer’, it is Mayra Andrade. Born in Cuba, of Cape Verdean parents, she grew up in Senegal, Angola and Germany, returning to her home country Cape Verde as a teenager. The 34-year-old vocalist has a velvety yet sparkling voice that can touch, surprise, and enchant at the same time. At a young age, Andrade was intrigued and subsequently inspired by the percussive and rhythmical African roots music that she heard around her. Since then she has closely cherished traditional Creole music and combines this with fire and passion in her own songs. Andrade takes you on a trip to cities in Cuba, the savanna of Africa, and the beach of Brazil, with her mix of Cape Verdean up-tempo rhythms, colored with present-day pop music and filled with reggae and jazz influences. With her latest album Manga only recently released, now is the time to check out this shining world singer.
