In 2015, Kamasi Washington set a new standard for progressive improvisation with his three-hour-long debut album The Epic. It placed the American artist at the vanguard of a new wave of jazz musicians who opened the door for a new generation of music fans to experience music they had never heard before. Those who have seen the 38-year-old saxophonist perform live with his dectet The Next Step - that includes bassist Miles Mosley - will know that Washington plays authentic jazz with a hip hop edge and a fiery rock ‘n’ roll attitude. His album Heaven And Earth was released last year and is a masterpiece on which he pushes the boundaries of advanced, free improvisation jazz even further. On the album, he also dives into the illustrious history of the genre with an audible tribute to jazz icons like Donald Byrd and John Coltrane. This unique, genre-busting artist is a must-see at the festival.
