Averse to rules, bursting with joy and always inventive: as a guest at North Sea Jazz, over the last decades Bobby McFerrin has shown us many facets of his creativity. Those who think the 1988 worldwide hit Don't Worry Be Happy typifies McFerrin couldn’t be more wrong. Of course, that song’s timeless a capella refrain will remain imprinted on your memory forever. But McFerrin’s work is much more expansive, ranging from adventures with the Vienna Philharmonic to his improvisation choir Voicestra. It’s no surprise that stars like Chick Corea, Quincy Jones and Herbie Hancock number among his musical partners. McFerrin has seen his groundbreaking work honored with no fewer than ten Grammy Awards. This summer, the vocal maestro is making a welcome return to the festival after an eleven-year absence. This time he is performing his extraordinary vocal compositions Circlesongs (1997) with his group Gimme 5. Be warned: the audience is encouraged to sing along!
