Pianist Abdullah Ibrahim, now 84 years old, is the face of South-African jazz. He learned to play piano in multicultural Cape Town where he was confronted by apartheid. All this shaped his musical vocabulary. Although Ibrahim is inspired by traditional African music, he has also seamlessly integrated gospel and Western jazz into his music. His most famous song is probably Mannenberg which is now regarded as an anti-apartheid anthem. In the 1960s, the pianist moved to New York and converted to Islam in 1968. Today he is based in Cape Town once again and mainly plays in Europe. At the North Sea Jazz Festival, Ibrahim’s show will include performing his legendary 1983 album Ekaya. He is playing with the septet that bears the same name, with whom he made the original recording.
