Panamanian pianist Danilo Pérez (1965) started out in the orchestra of Dizzy Gillespie. What followed was a musical career during which he developed a blend of postbop and Latin American music. He also became a sought-after accompanist, with Wayne Shorter among others. Now he’s starting on a new adventure with trumpeter Avishai Cohen (1978) and tenor saxophonist Chris Potter (1971). It is a quintet in which bassist Larry Grenadier (1966) also plays an important role. A true super group, and they have drummer Jonathan Blake (1976)) to lay the rhythmic foundation. The music is composed by all group members and has the ultimate goal to unite the boundless language of Pérez’ music with the possibilities that were revealed to him by Wayne Shorter. The themes of the compositions are very special; they pay homage to iconic women activists like Angela Davis.
