It is no surprise that Austrian jazz formation Shake Stew is helped out by Shabaka Hutchings on two of the tracks on their latest album. The young artists fit right into the exciting new trend making its way across European jazz scenes that also includes the British sax player. Their music is a combination of spiritual jazz and cosmopolitan, multicultural influences. With two drummers, two bassists and three horn players, Shake Stew has found a unique lineup that presents the audience with a hypnotizing mix of Afrobeat and jazz grooves. The driving force behind the band is the creative mind of bass player Lukas Kranzelbinder. He is a difficult artist to ascribe to a genre, as his resumé makes clear. He has written an opera and organized a concert series on the Austrian mountain peaks, where he hauled the orchestra and their instruments - including his own double bass - up to a height of 2000 meters.
