Pianist Michel Camilo (1954) was born in the Dominican Republic. When he was sixteen, he became the youngest member of the country’s national symphony orchestra. He first got acquainted with jazz music through a recording of Tea For Two by pianist Art Tatum. In 1979 he went to New York and since his debut at Carnegie Hall in 1985, he has evolved into a prominent artist on the international music scene. That year he also recorded his first album: Why Not? Three years later he released his first real bestseller with a self-titled album. Camilo has won a number of Grammy and Emmy Awards and he has recorded many albums and soundtracks, switching effortlessly between jazz, Latin, and classical music. He has also collaborated extensively with flamenco guitarist Tomatito. This year his album Essence was released, on which he worked together with a big band. Camilo will perform this material at the festival together with New Cool Collective Horns.
