The role of music as a conveyor of political messages and as a means of standing up to power was never as important as it was in the 1960s and ‘70s - that is, until now. Moderator Ashley Kahn would like to know how, in Gilberto Gil’s own experience, coming to prominence as part of the Tropicalia wave in Brazil, when the government was much more conservative, is an example of this; and now another conservative regime is in power in Brazil (and many other countries.) What are the lessons he learned about the role of music that are still useful today? What has changed now?
