Raised outside London, Devonté Hynes is the creative mind behind many exciting music projects. For example, he was the driving force behind indie-rock outfit Lightspeed Champion and he has written fabulous numbers for well-known artists. Moreover, he is in high demand as a producer. But the 33-year-old has now drawn the best out of himself with the electronic R&B project Blood Orange that is bursting with solid surprising hooks, jazz-inspired instrumental improvisations, and socially engaged lyrics. The stunning debut album Coastal Grooves came out seven years ago, but with last year’s Negro Swan Hynes outdoes himself in more ways than one. In particular, Hynes uses the structure of the songs - complex, laid back and yet provocative - to show us that contemporary R&B and tightly produced pop with a touch of rock (reminiscent of super talents like Anderson .Paak and Frank Ocean) may just be the sound of the next decade.
