Drummer, composer and band leader Dafnis Prieto (1974) was born in Santa Clara, Cuba. In 1999, he went to New York to further hone his jazz skills. Prieto worked with Eddie Palmieri, Arturo O’Farrell, Steve Coleman and Michel Camilo. He also evolved into a highly original composer who combines magnificent, jubilant melodies with complex polyrhythm. At the same time, the breadth of his music stretches from Afro-Cuban folk music to Latin jazz and classical chamber music. In 2017 he embarked on a new adventure: the Dafnis Prieto Big Band. A year later came their debut album Back To The Sunset. Prieto is bringing that repertoire to Rotterdam with the famous Aarhus Jazz Orchestra, a formation he played with earlier this year. Danish jazz musician Jens Klüver formed the orchestra in 1977 as a kind of training ground. Today, the extremely empathetic AJO is a very popular backing band.
