You could easily say that Rubén Blades is a renaissance man, someone who uses his talents widely. As an actor, he has worked with the likes of Robert De Niro, Jack Nicholson, Denzel Washington and Spike Lee; at home in Panama he has been a political activist and has even run for president. But above all else, Blades is a composer and vocalist, and one of the world’s most successful Latin artists. His socially engaged lyrics are a characteristic feature of his music. His ‘thinking man’s’ salsa, sometimes combined with jazz and rock, has won him many Grammys and Latin Grammy Awards. The most recent (in 2017) was for his collaboration with the salsa orchestra of Roberto Delgado with whom he is coming to Rotterdam. On their 2017 album, Salsa Big Band, they don’t shy away from experimenting but the focus is on breathing new life into an old tradition that is rarely heard at international festivals: the sound of a large salsa orchestra.
