The Nationaal Jeugd Jazz Orkest (NJJO) is a 20-piece big band made up of musical top talents and as such it is sometimes called the ‘Dutch Junior Jazz Team’. This youth orchestra is formed every two years and the members must be no older than 26. They are put through an intensive training program of music coaching, workshops, a tour and special (international) collaborations, with the Young Metropole, for example. Former leaders of the NJJO include Martin Fondse, Eric Vloeimans, Benjamin Herman, and Peter Guidi. This year the Amsterdam-based master gitarist, composer and bandleader Anton Goudsmit is taking on the role once more. Goudsmit has been active on the Dutch jazz scene for decades with, among others, The Ploctones and Estafest. In addition, he has played with the New Cool Collective and the Eric Vloeimans Quartet. The NJJO is an initiative of Jazz in Action which was set up by the Ntb (the largest Dutch union for performing artists).
