It’s a somewhat odd combination: a trombone (Louk Boudesteijn), a saxophone (Nils van Haften) and a guitar (Anton Goudsmit). But this is no ordinary band, because who would call a trio Einzelgänger (German for ‘soloist’)? But then again, they are just that: three idiosyncratic soloists. And yet they do form a coherent band, because they leave room for each improvisation and weird twist. They often play loudly, and sometimes softly, but always in a good-natured way. The title of their debut album, Musica Gymnastica, says it all, really. For musical gymnastics you need to be able to bend, jump and duck; to fold and to expand. Einzelgänger are able to do so like no other band; they can bend their music every which way. What begins as calm becomes chaos; what appears straightforward, becomes crooked.
