The Roosevelt High School Jazz Band is the top group among five performing jazz ensembles at Seattle Roosevelt High School. Members meet for 50 minutes of rehearsal each school day as part of the curriculum and students organize weekly ‘sectionals’ outside of school hours for extra rehearsal when preparing for big performances, such as the numerous festivals and competitions throughout the Pacific Northwest and beyond they attend. Many graduates of the Jazz Band attend prestigious music schools in the U.S. and pursue careers in music and music education. Steeped in the great swing traditions of the Basie and Ellington bands, but with an ever-expanding repertoire of modern big band literature and a ton of outstanding jazz soloists, the Roosevelt High School Jazz Band swings sets that thrill jazz audiences wherever they perform. Conductor Scott Brown, who was once named ‘Jazz Educator of the Year’ by DownBeat magazine, has directed Roosevelt’s jazz program since 1984.
