According to the eminent jazz guru Gunther Schuller, the rebellious jazz legend Charles Mingus (1933-1979) was also an excellent bassist. ‘But it is as a composer that I believe Mingus must ultimately be assessed as one of the true giants of music,’ he added. Mingus died in Mexico on 5 January 1979; he was only 56. In the following years interest in his music remained surprisingly strong, thanks to the efforts of his widow, Sue. She kept the attention for his music alive with initiatives like the Mingus Dynasty and the Mingus Big Band, with weekly concerts in New York, among other events. The 14-member orchestra also kept on touring extensively and it’s worth noting that many great names on the jazz scene liked to participate in the Mingus Big Band. Since then the orchestra has released ten albums, of which Mingus Big Band Live At Jazz Standard received a Grammy Award in 2011.
