In 2015 he made his debut at North Sea Jazz as a newcomer in soul music; this year Leon Bridges returns as a star. Still, the story about the humble start of his career sounds like a fairy tale: the dishwasher who was discovered with his song Coming Home and within a few years was singing for then-president Obama at the White House. In no time, Bridges grew into a new soul hero. His supple moves on stage alone are worth the price of admission. He slinks around his microphone like a panther and then sings a sultry version of Bad Bad News. His sound is still rooted in sixties’ soul and R&B, and comparisons to Otis Redding and Sam Cooke will be with him for quite some time to come. However, on his latest album Good Thing he exchanged his bespoke Motown ‘suit’ for a more contemporary R&B sound that fits him just as perfectly.
