Like many singers from America’s south before her, Ruthie Foster discovered her voice in a church choir in her hometown. Coming from a family of gospel singers, the dynamic Texan’s future seemed set in stone. Nonetheless, Foster now mixes the influences of her formative years with blues, rock, folk, seventies soul, and Americana. No matter what genre she explores, her passionate voice sets every venue alight. Visitors to North Sea Jazz have already experienced this twice (in 2009 and 2015), but never before with a big band. Last year, Foster performed with the Latvian Radio Big Band. She enjoyed that adventure so much that this year she is performing at North Sea Jazz with the Espoo Big Band (EBB), one of Finland’s leading large jazz orchestras. Foster is in good company because in the past EBB has played with the likes of Freddie Hubbard, Ray Charles and McCoy Tyner.
