Saxophonist Charles Lloyd is a legend. The artist grew up in the forties in Memphis which was the hub of American music at the time. Since age twelve he has played with blues heroes like B.B. King, Howlin’ Wolf, Johnnie Ace and Bobbie ‘Blue’ Bland. After he moved to Los Angeles in the fifties, he formed his own group, and slowly developed his particular sound. Lloyd’s post-bop style became a resounding success. With his band, which included pianist Keith Jarrett and drummer Jack DeJohnette, he became the frontman of the free jazz movement. Later in his career he played with pianist Michel Petrucciani and in the nineties he recorded a range of sublime records for the ECM label. He is bringing a band of top-notch musicians to Rotterdam: guitarist Bill Frisell, bassist Reuben Rogers, and drummer Eric Harland.
