On his latest album, Life And Death On The Other Side Of The Dream, promising South African guitarist and composer Vuma Levin lets you hear a wide array of styles from the country of his birth. Levin uniquely blends these styles with a wide range of elements from Western music, such as jazz, pop and electronica. With this modern take, Levin tells his own story of Africa, its inhabitants and its rich traditions. The Vuma Levin Quintet is a multicultural group of fast-rising stars on the Dutch jazz scene, including pianist Xavi Torres who has twice won the Keep An Eye International Jazz Award. Writing about Levin for AFROPUNK, Edward Kgosidintsi doesn’t mince his words: ‘He’s an eclectically cutting-edge, aesthetically refreshing new addition to the contemporary African jazz scene. He’s the personification of these exciting times for Africa and Africans around the globe. Watch out Kamasi Washington, Vuma Levin’s in the building!’
