Bassist Jasper Høiby was born in Copenhagen but in 2000 he moved to London to study at the Royal Academy of Music. In 2005, he formed the trio Phronesis with whom he toured extensively in Europe and North America. Last year, Høiby and his trio won the Parliamentary Jazz Award for Best Jazz Ensemble of the Year and he was also nominated for the Composer of the Year award at the Danish Music Awards. ‘Jasper Høiby’s wistful yet vibrant compositions are uniformly irresistible,’ wrote All About Jazz. Høiby’s other projects include the drumless trio Malija and the quintet Fellow Creatures which he is bringing to North Sea Jazz. The other members of Fellow Creatures are Laura Jurd (trumpet), Mark Lockheart (saxophone), Will Barry (piano), and Jon Scott (drums). A mix of young and more mature musicians from the London jazz scene who play with a strong sense of groove and an optimistic, driving energy.
