Oklahoma-born and Brooklyn-based, thirty-something singer-songwriter, vocalist, and cellist Gabriel Royal used to busk in the New York subway. For Royal, the passersby were a source of inspiration and he composed 'adult lullabies' for them. Wistful, dream-evoking numbers in which the combination of Royal’s melancholy voice and delicate cello playing results in striking intimacy. His music idols include Stevie Wonder and Burt Bacharach but Royal is also clearly inspired by what is happening in R&B today. His music is a unique, audacious form of R&B similar to that of artists like John Legend and James Blake. Following the release of his first album in 2016, this year Royal toured Europe and is making his debut at North Sea Jazz.
