The Canadian group BADBADNOTGOOD performed at the North Sea Jazz Festival in 2013, as a trio at the time. For those who missed them that year, there’s a second chance. The trio: keyboardist Matthew Tavares, bassist Chester Hansen and drummer Alexander Sowinski, broke through in 2014 with the album III, a cheeky and yet refined mix of jazz improvisations, sensual ballads, futuristic hip-hop rhythms, and cosmic Kraut rock. Following the success of III there came a worldwide tour and collaborations with hip-hop stars like Kendrick Lamar and Ghostface Killah. In 2016 saxophonist Leland Whitty joined the group and their album IV was released. Producer Kaytranada, saxophonist Colin Stetson, rapper Mick Jenkins and vocalist Sam Herring of Future Islands also worked on this album. BBC Radio 6 Music chose BadBadNotGood’s album, IV, as the station’s No. 1 Album of the Year.
