Mexican pianist Alex Mercado has acquired loyal jazz fans all over the world thanks to his phenomenal technique and wealth of ideas. Mercado started his career as a pianist on cruise ships where he learned to captivate an audience. He draws his listeners into his world and doesn’t let them leave. After earning a living for many years as a music teacher, in 2012 Mercado released his debut album The Watcher, with Aaron Cruz and Gabriel Puentes. The follow-up, self-release album Symbiosis appeared in 2014, this time with drummer Antonio Sánchez and American bassist Scott Colley. Jazz magazine DownBeat picked up on the album and it was acclaimed internationally. Mercado gave a series of concerts in the Netherlands for the first time in 2015. This year marks his debut at the North Sea Jazz Festival. He will be playing with his trio made up of Israel Cupich on bass and Gabriel Puentes on drums with whom Mercado also recorded his latest album Paisajes (2017).
