Saxophonist and composer Steve Coleman has turned 60 but his innovative playing and endless search for new forms and ideas is timeless. Since 1985 he has been adding his own unique twist to jazz music and he was a member of the groundbreaking band M-Base Collective. With the group Five Elements, back in the nineties, he made several legendary albums, including Rhythm People and Black Science. This band was the basis for the pieces he wrote for a large ensemble which he called The Council of Balance. Coleman drew inspiration for his compositions from the sounds of the Amazon region and they were released in 2014 on the well-received album Synovial Joints. The New York Times listed the record as one of the best albums of 2015. Together with musicians from the Five elements, Coleman will perform the album, accompanied by the DoelenEnsemble, a group that specializes in 20th century music.
