What would happen if we would strip gospel of all its frills, guitarists Paul Wilemsen and Onno Smits (Lefties Soul Connection, Beans & Fatback) asked themselves. The answer: The Gospel Sessions Volume 1, a record they made in 2014 with American vocalist Michelle David. That approach allowed them not only to come to the core of soul: critics and audiences alike responded ecstatically. In all halls, churches and festivals the roof was raised thanks to David's exhilarating performances. Now there is The Gospel Sessions Volume 2 that sounds much richer in a musical sense, due to the use of percussion, strings and an organ. But the album is also much more personal to David. On it are songs that are part of her life and that she sang as a child in her church. At North Sea Jazz David and her men will let the audience feel and experience the power of gospel.
