The career of Becca Stevens has truly rocketed in recent years. She performed at North Sea Jazz back in 2013, in a small upstairs hall where she seemed somewhat overawed by playing at a renowned jazz festival. At the time, the classically trained singer was only known to a small circle of aficionados; fans of her inventive blend of indie pop, jazz and Appalachian folk. Today, she has toured the corners of the globe and worked with big names like Brad Mehldau, Esperanza Spalding, Ambrose Akinmusire and Snarky Puppy. Stevens' new album Regina proves that she must be counted as one of the major singer-songwriters of this time. Regina pays homage to strong women, from her grandmother to Ophelia, Venus and Elizabeth I. Laura Mvula, Jacob Collier and David Crosby can also be heard on the album, while producer Troy Miller has created a full, robust sound.
