In 2006, with his tribute to MC and producer J Dilla who had died aged just 32, Miguel Atwood-Ferguson proved that hip hop really can last. Dilla had been regarded as a genius and enjoyed cult status in hip hop circles. Thanks to the progressive formats and orchestral quality of his music, he was dubbed "the Mozart of hip hop". Dilla's work inspired violinist and conductor Atwood-Ferguson (who has worked with Outkast and Sly Stone, among others) and producer Carlos Nino to make Suite For Ma Dukes. What started out in 2009 as a 4-track EP grew into a series of exciting live shows with the music interpreted by an ensemble with a changing lineup (including keyboardist Mark de Clive-Lowe). In the live shows, the musicians use instruments to play Dilla’s tracks that were originally built around samples, exposing the razor-sharp ingenuity and complexity of his compositions.
