Jeangu Macrooy grew up in tropical Paramaribo where his parents gave him his first guitar when he was 13. Two years later he started writing songs with his twin brother Xillan, and they performed together as Between Towers. Macrooy studied at the conservatory of music in Suriname before moving to the Netherlands in 2014 to pursue his musical dream – with success! The 23-year-old singer-songwriter began to collaborate with producer Perquisite, released his EP Brave Enough last year, and played at various festivals with his band. Moreover, he had a hit with his socially engaged single Gold and was named 3FM Serious Talent. This April saw the release of his debut album High On You. Macrooy’s soulful sound and vocals shift from intimate and vulnerable to raw and outspoken. A scintillating – sometimes dark – mix of acoustic folk, blues, soul, and R&B, always underpinned by the lovely voice of one of Suriname´s biggest talents.
