Multi-layered, with abstract subtleties and dynamic complexity – that is one way to describe the double album Atmosphères recorded by pianist Tigran Hamasyan, trumpeter Arve Henriksen, guitarist Eivind Aarset and electronics guru Jan Bang. Each of the four men have made a name for themselves in a variety of formations. They have a shared love of exploring the unknown in seemingly endless improvisations. Hamasyan is the group’s centre with his lyrical melodies and Armenian folk influences, while Aarset and Henriksen navigate mysterious waters by distancing themselves from melody. Bang turns different knobs, allowing the sounds to ebb and flow. Atmosphères dares listeners to become enchanted by the music, to follow the improvisations and uncover sound details. A timeless mysticism in which new forms and shapes constantly unfold. According to the British daily The Guardian the album announces the arrival of 'an elite collective with a distinctive identity and big potential'.
