‘The future of jazz has risen’ wrote the authoritative magazine Jazzism in a review of Teus Nobel’s album Legacy. That the 34-year-old Dutch trumpeter is being taken seriously was also made clear when he won the Radio 6 Soul & Jazz Talent Award and the Laren Jazz Award. Over the past decades, Nobel has played in horn sections of the bands of Caro Emerald, Frank McComb, Brandon Flowers and others. This year the Teus Nobel Quintet will present their third album Social Music at the North Sea Jazz Festival. The music on this album is the result of a collaboration with guitarist and producer Merlijn Verboom. The title is a reference to Miles Davis who used the term to describe contemporary music that constantly builds on everything that went before. Apart from Davis, influences from Roy Hargrove, Flying Lotus and D’Angelo also shine through on Social Music.
