Phil’s Music Laboratory is a project that revolves around a new face on the jazz scene: pianist Philipp Rüttgers. Originally from Germany, Rüttgers now lives in Arnhem, the Netherlands. With his septet, he plays lovely compositions involving evocative, narrative songs. His band members are well known on the Dutch jazz scene, and together they released a ‘Best of’ selection of his work in 2014 and also recorded a live CD during a concert at the LUX cultural centre in Nijmegen. This was the second CD Rüttgers released as bandleader and it received rave reviews in the Dutch press. The audience was aware that the concert was being recorded, and at one moment they were even allowed to decide if a second take was necessary... Rüttgers is an adventurer who explores and examines new ways of making music and he does so in an unconventional, surprising and perceptive manner. His Laboratory presents a musical journey bursting with driving and intriguing rhythms, unusual time signatures and a unique balance with plenty of freedom for the soloists.
