Pharoah Sanders (1940) is without a doubt a legendary saxophonist-flutist. For many jazz lovers the man from Little Rock will always be associated with his collaboration with John Coltrane. This was in the mid-sixties, but before that time he had already worked with Sun Ra and had had a lot of success with pianist John Hicks and drummer Billy Higgins. In 1965 he took part in the Coltrane sessions, working on groundbreaking records like Ascension and Meditations. He also made albums in his own name that caused a hullaballoo, like Tauhid (1966) and Karma (1969). In the 1970s Sanders investigated how to mix West African and South African rhythms with free jazz, by adding several layers of percussion and vocals. At North Sea Jazz he will be plunging into Indian rhythms and will perform with the famous percussionist Trilok Gurtu and pianist William Henderson.
