Yearning is a powerful stimulus for all forms of art. For saxophonist Yuri Honing (who has worked with Pat Metheny, Charlie Haden, Craig Taborn, Paul Bley and Misha Mengelberg, among others) it led to a beautiful album full of tender music permeated through and through with compassion. Desire (2015) is a CD on which in his own personal way he lets us hear every facet of yearning. Non-western music also often constitutes a challenge for this musician. Desire led him to draw inspiration from the now deceased writer Joost Zwagerman who wrote the libretto Ons Hart for the album. Desire was the best-selling jazz CD in the Netherlands in 2015 - a new milestone for the artist who won the Boy Edgar Prize in 2012 and who, until September 2014, had worked with a ‘hard’ band (Wired Paradise) and a ‘soft’ band. Since that time, the multi-talented Honing (1965) has mainly focused on his acoustic quartet that consists of Wolfert Brederode (piano), bassist Gulli Gudmundsson and drummer Joost Lijbaart.
